Fraunhofer ICT presents latest research developments in thermoplastic foaming

The foam technologies team at Fraunhofer ICT is developing thermoplastic particle and extrusion foams as well as corresponding process technologies.

An overview of current developments will be presented to demonstrate trends and future topics in thermoplastic foams.

Materials shown at the Fraunhofer booth will include polymeric particle and extrusion foams made from renewable resources - such as PLA - addressing the need to find alternatives for petrochemical products, as well as foams made from technical polymers to broaden the spectrum of foam materials towards high temperature and high performance applications.

Hybridisation of foams together with different reinforcements like fibers or films show the potential of using different processing techniques like resin transfer moulding or long fiber spraying with tailored foams as a basis, proofing, that these foams are suitable for use in such processes.

Furthermore, the development of flame retardant foams avoiding halogenated flame retardants is a huge challenge to avoid possible banning of polymeric foams in fire sensitive applications. Therefore, latest results of non-halogenated flame retardant foams are shown.

Targeted applications for the developments shown are building and construction, automotive, sports and packaging industry.
