SURPASS – safe-, sustainable- and recyclable-by design polymeric systems a guidance towards next generation of plastics

SURPASS is a research and innovation project, whose objective is to lead by example the transition towards more safe, sustainable and recyclable by design (SSRbD) polymeric materials.

The goal of SURPASS is to develop a scoring-based assessment that will guide material designers and recyclers to design SSRbD polymeric materials. The tool will be based on the results of three case studies:

  • Building: recyclable-by-design bio-sourced polyurethane resins with enhanced vitrimer properties for window frames
  • Transport: flame retardant composites based on a epoxy vitrimer for the railway sector
  • Packaging: recyclable MultiNanoLayered films without any compatibilizers

Approach and project schedule of SURPASS

Fraunhofer ICT is in the lead of work package „Sustainable technologies towards polymer recycling“ and is responsible for the development of recycling technologies for MultiNanoLayered films.

Furthermore, Fraunhofer ICT develops flame retardants for the epoxy-vitrimer composites for rail applications in accordance to SSRbD criteria.

Funding

The research project SURPASS has received funding from the European Union‘s Horizon Europe for Research and Innovation program under grant agreement number 101057901.

Duration

The project duration is 42 months. The project start was 01.06.2022.
