Every year, JEC World brings together the entire value chain of the composites industry in Paris, France, and is the place to be for composites professionals from all over the world.

At the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft's joint booth in Hall 5, Stand L142, we will be showcasing our newly developed and optimised materials and processes for manufacturing high-performance lightweight structures at JEC 2026 in Paris. We achieve maximum strength in components through the targeted use of continuous fibres. We place great importance on improved material formulations based on secondary raw materials, bio-based and recyclable material systems, energy-efficient processing methods and bio-based, self-reinforced composite materials.

Carbon fibre wishbone

The carbon fibre SMC wishbone is the result of a collaboration between Fraunhofer ICT, Gestamp Autotech Engineering Germany, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, DG Aviation, Koller Formenbau, Toray Industries Europe and Vibracoustic SE & Co. KG. It was nominated for the JEC Award 2026 in the category ‘Automotive & Road Transportation – Process’.

A control arm for automotive applications was developed from carbon fibre-reinforced sheet moulding compound (SMC). The combination of high-performance materials, design innovation, functional integration and efficient processing resulted in excellent structural performance combined with low weight: the control arm weighs less than half as much as a comparable metal component. It also offers advantages in terms of resource efficiency, emission reduction and ecological footprint, and enables a continuous virtual process chain for SMC.

The GITCC FlexDisplay project, led by the Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology ICT in collaboration with South Korean partners, focuses on developing an ultra-thin, highly filled, thermally conductive CFRP backplate for foldable smartphone displays. The CFRP layer, approximately 130 micrometers thick, addresses the increasing demands on heat dissipation, weight, and component thickness in mobile devices. As electronic components become more powerful, thermal loads rise, reducing reliability and device lifetime, while conventional metallic backplates are unsuitable due to magnetic interference. Although CFRP backplates are already used, challenges remain regarding thermal conductivity, manufacturing costs, and precise dimensioning. The project aims to overcome these issues by improving heat dissipation and establishing technologies for producing ultra-thin CFRP components, including material and process development, benchmarking of production methods, demonstrator fabrication, validation, and technology transfer to partners.

Lightweight box with a monomaterial approach

Im Monomaterial-Ansatz gefertigte Leichtbau-Transportbox aus PET

Fraunhofer ICT demonstrates with a highly innovative modular transport box that lightweight design and circularity are not mutually exclusive. The approach is based on targeted morphological modification of thermoplastic polymers, enabling the mechanical properties of a single material to be tailored to the application.

In the exhibit this is realized by highly drawn PET fibers embedded in a PET matrix; these form the face-sheets of an adhesive‑free sandwich composite with a core of PET structural foam. The resulting sandwich structures not only exhibit optimized bending properties but—thanks to the fully thermoplastic approach — also allow additional functionalization. Demonstrated features include a compacted edge profile and PET injection‑molded components for integrating joining structures. The complete single‑material module concept facilitates straightforward recycling.

This also showcases Fraunhofer ICT’s expertise in processing and coordinated process control for adhesive‑free joining, thermo-forming and injection molding of single‑material systems.

User benefit: a fully closed material loop that enables sustainable mass production with a reduced environmental footprint—without compromising functionality or component performance.

High-Performance Glass-Fiber Pultruded Profiles with Proxxima™ (pDCPD)

High-performance glass-fiber pultruded profiles with Proxxima™ (pDCPD), engineered to increase line speed and part performance. The profiles shown here have a fiber volume content of approximately 73 % and combine glass fibers with the hydrophobic Proxxima™ matrix, a polyolefin thermoset resin system from ExxonMobil. Low viscosity and tunable snap‑cure kinetics enable rapid fiber wet‑out, short cure times, and greater process stability and throughput.

Proxxima™ resin systems are compatible with injection and bath‑based pultrusion processes and support high fiber/filler loadings. Parts benefit from high toughness, long fatigue life, and excellent chemical and corrosion resistance with low moisture uptake. Efficient impregnation enables thinner, highly filled profiles at comparable stiffness and can reduce raw material use. Ideal for manufacturers seeking to combine speed, durability, and cost‑effectiveness in pultrusion.

The exhibited mock-up of a battery housing made of glass-fibre-reinforced Proxxima™ (pDCPD) demonstrates the applicability of the novel resin system in large components. The low viscosity allows for long flow paths, while the adjustable reactivity profile enables short cycle times. As shown by the exhibit, robust functional features made of neat resin can be integrated without any additional processing step.
