National hydrogen flagship project: "H2Mare" – producing green hydrogen offshore

The conditions at sea are ideal for generating renewable electricity. The wind turbines are generally much larger than on land, meaning that more green electricity is produced, and far larger areas are potentially available for generating wind energy.

However, not only electricity but also hydrogen can be produced cost-effectively and sustainably offshore. The H2Mare flagship project is therefore researching the offshore production of "green hydrogen" and other power-to-X products. In the future, a completely new type of plant will be applied at sea: an offshore wind energy plant with an integrated electrolyser for the direct conversion of electricity. The entire value chain will be considered: from wind energy generation and hydrogen production through to the conversion of hydrogen into methane, liquid hydrocarbons, methanol or ammonia up to consumption by industry or the energy sector. This means that various industrial follow-up utilization and storage options are possible. The direct coupling of wind turbine and electrolyser is intended to minimize the costs of hydrogen production. This is because infrastructure costs can be significantly reduced without a connection to the electricity grid. In addition, the decoupling of electrolysis and the grid reduces the burden on local grid structures.

The project “H2Mare” aims to lay the foundation for technological leadership and to support the achievement of climate goals through accelerated greenhouse gas reduction.

Within four years, H2Mare - consisting of four subprojects with a total of 35 partners - aims to lay the foundations for technological leadership and to support the achievement of climate goals through accelerated greenhouse gas reduction.

Our task in the project is to develop a concept for the black start capability of the electrolysis platform, to research concepts and methods for the inherently explosion-proof design of the platform and to develop models for systemic digital twins and methods for the automated analysis of functional safety. These will be used to optimize the platform concept from an economic and safety point of view.

Online game brings future technologies to life

H2Mare is researching the foundations for the offshore production of green hydrogen in the future. And the technology required for this can now be experienced within a game. In the H2Mare game "Offshore", the players can build an offshore wind farm and use it to generate and trade power-to-X products.

Current figures and research data from H2Mare have been incorporated into the game to ensure its scientific quality. Experts from the hydrogen flagship project worked closely with the game developers to achieve this. Data on realistic weather conditions and environmental events were also incorporated into the game to create an authentic gaming experience.

In a virtual marine environment, players are invited to create their own offshore park. The aim is to collect as many points as possible within a limited time. Both the quantities of green hydrogen produced and its downstream products as well as environmentally friendly behavior are included in the score. Integrated tasks and quiz questions provide further points and test the players' knowledge.

With the help of various plants, players can produce different energy carriers in "Offshore".

With this modern approach, H2Mare wants to reach a new target group interested in future technologies. Young people with an affinity for technology can engage with green hydrogen and power-to-X technologies in a fun way.

"Offshore - the H2Mare Game" can be played free of charge and without registration or prior installation. It is compatible with all common browsers for desktop PCs, smartphones and tablets.
