Solid propellants and explosives 4K

We offer an excellent research environment, as we cover the entire development process for propellants and explosives, from the raw product to the system prototype. Our many years of experience, combined with cutting-edge equipment, make us a reliable and unique partner for national and international research institutions, the defense industry, and the German Armed Forces.

Fraunhofer ICT is the only German research institute that develops explosives, rocket propellants, gun propellants and detonating agents and evaluates their properties and reactivity.

Reaction Calorimeter for Synthesis Safety Studies

During synthesis new chemical compounds are created, and their thermal and chemical properties are defined. The reaction progress is monitored online using cutting-edge reaction calorimeters and simultaneous IR spectroscopy.  A manipulator enables the safe handling of highly sensitive explosives and rocket propellants.

In addition to modern batch processes, we also use micro-processing technology. Material and heat transport in reaction systems can be intensified, and the most important process parameters can be regulated using this method.

We produce microparticles and microcapsules based on emulsions.  The drop size and the subsequent crystallization or polymerization can be controlled.

For the further processing and refinement of solid explosives, we use specially developed processes to create particles with a defined size, size distribution and morphology. By applying coatings or functional composites to the particle surface, the properties of the substances or subsequent formulations can be modified.

In the manufacturing process, individual chemical components can be assembled according to a predefined sequence, and process parameters such as time and mixing intensity can be regulated.  It is particularly important to achieve reproducibility, and the highest possible mixing quality. We carry out each of these hazardous processes remotely for increased safety.

Differential Scanning Calorimeter Cell

In order to investigate the behavior of energetic materials during aging, or the interaction of different energetic and non-energetic components, we examine the time-dependent changes to a wide range of material properties, including gas development, material decomposition or heat development resulting from chemical reactions.

The stability of all energetic substances along the value chain is monitored seamlessly.

Characterization of solid rocket propellants and explosives

Burning of a rocket engine

A key area of work is the characterization of the reaction and performance properties of propellants and explosives.  This includes the investigation and modeling of the ignition and burning behavior. The values determined here form the basis for internal ballistic models, new propellant concepts and signature characterization.
