Development of a data-map for waste management in Europe

Level of work

Thesis work for Bachelor or Master or student assistant

Motivation

In the department Environmental Engineering, the Fraunhofer ICT works on national and international research projects on material and product development, environmental simulation, recycling and life cycle assessment.

Observing the current trends in the production and subsequent waste management, 12000 Mt of plastic waste will be disposed in the landfills by 2050. Through its policies, the European Union analyses the collection of this waste and supports its use as a secondary source of raw material for the chemical and allied industries. These policies not only direct the sustainability targets of several sectors but also result in the development of new business models that generate wealth out of waste. A holistic understanding of these policies is essential to guide efforts directed towards developing new recycling strategies that either trouble-shoot the existing bottlenecks and/or explore new avenues for further development.

Project description

The ultimate goal is to develop a data map of critical policies that deal with waste management in Europe and identify key-players in the industry which contribute to and/or abide by these policies.

Tasks

  • Comprehensive literature research on state-of-the-art technologies for recycling
  • Identification of the most relevant fractions (based on their sector of application) that can be subjected to recycling in accordance with the policy framework established by the European Union
  • Developing a data-map for recycling different fractions in a typical waste stream based on the current policies of the European Union
  • Identifying key-players in academia and industry which can serve as potential customers for different technologies developed at Fraunhofer ICT
  • Contribution to a publication to disseminate the scientific findings
