»REACh in Aviation«
When developing new aircrafts, it is important that they are resistant to deterioration in performance, for example due to corrosion, environmental damage, or delamination of composite materials. Accidental damage during operation or maintenance must be avoided at all costs.
Aircraft components are expected to withstand fire for a certain period of time without producing toxic fumes. This leads to the use of flame retardants, insulation blankets, or chemically treated heat protection elements in hot areas, for example near engines. It can be particularly challenging to replace high-performance materials with a high-risk potential when there is no alternative available yet.
As a body of the European Commission, the EASA (European Union Aviation Safety Agency) supervises the industrial use of hazardous chemicals through its institution EChA (European chemicals agency). It classifies the hazardousness based on scientific studies and thus restricts their industrial use and, for extremely hazardous substances, demands their substitution by less hazardous substances within a certain time frame. The list of dangerous substances and preparations is constantly being expanded and updated in the so-called REACh (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) list.
If you are a professional or a researcher in REACh relevant aviation topics, you are invited to submit an abstract. The abstract should identify the name and affiliation of all authors and the presentation title (max. 150 words).
Please submit the abstract by 6th October 2023 to Gabriela Gromer.
