Fraunhofer Project Center for Composites Research FPC@UNIST

The Fraunhofer Project Center for Composites Research at the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (FPC@UNIST) represents a comprehensive initiative between a Korean university and the Fraunhofer ICT.

UNIST is a science- and engineering-focused, post-secondary national institute located in the heart of Korea’s largest industrial city, Ulsan, South Korea. UNIST is one of four nationally funded “ISTs” in Korea along with Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST), and Daegu-Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology (DGIST).

The main research topic at the FPC@UNIST is the use of fiber reinforced composites in lightweight applications, especially in the automotive sector. Work is oriented towards the demands of the regional Asian market. The FPC has innovative and state-of-the-art processing equipment for fiber composite, such as a press with a molding pressure of 2500t, automated tape laying, automated preform center, different resin infusion systems, injection molding and a LFT-D line, enabling component research to be carried out on an industrial scale.

FPC@UNIST will be located on UNIST campus, which is conveniently located within the Ulsan metropolitan area – 14 km from the city center, 10 km from Ulsan Station (2 hours and 15 minutes to Seoul Station), 20 km from Ulsan Airport, and accessible from major industrial complexes.
