In many application fields the interaction of plastics with liquid or gaseous substances is decisive for the choice of materials. For example, the gas permeation rate of packaging or the diffusion properties of fuels through PE tanks are an important factor in the cleaning of production waste and the recycling of the basic polymer.
A distinction should be made between physical and chemical interaction. While physical interaction is generally seen as reversible, chemical changes to the polymer − often associated with discolouration − are irreversible.
Due to the range of parameters involved (gas or liquid, polymer, temperatures, pressures, stress, length of use), standard investigations for the intended application, such as those carried out by material manufacturers, are often not reliable enough. Specific investigations adjusted to the individual case are required to design components to meet requirements, and to select suitable materials.
The Fraunhofer ICT has particular experience in investigating the interaction of tank systems with hydrocarbon mixtures, and in the investigation lacquer solvent systems, as well as the investigation of functional elements for fittings. In addition to durability studies, surface effects such as the wetting angle and surface tension can be measured.
